Last night, a lunar eclipse took place above the night sky of National Planetarium. We took this opportunity to gather the astronomy enthusiasts around the compound and spent the entire evening observing the different phases of the lunar eclipse.
Around 100+ people gathered with the Planetarium team and included some teams from prominent enthusiast groups such as FalakOnline and ProStar teams. A live web telecast also took place during the duration of this event to give viewers at home opportunity to see what can be seen by us at the National Planetarium.

NITROS - UIA GOMBAK
|
|
The past weekend, on the 31st January and 1st February, the National Islamic Astronomy Sysposium (NITORS) was held in the International Islamic University of Malaysia in Gombak, Selangor. The National Planetarium was invited to this event as one of the exhibitors and also facilitate the night observation/stargazing session. We took this opportunity to display our photos of the latest partial eclipse that we manage to observe from Teluk Kemang and also the program that took place a few days before.
In this event also, we debut out touchscreen/kiosk for the first time to the vast public. We ran a continuous display of photos that we took during the eclipse, the stellarium software and also distributed a huge number of mobile phone starchart using the kiosk.
Many students took the chance to play with the touchscreen kiosk and navigate the night sky inside stellarium. However, most of them used the software to view the constellations that were in the sky the night they were born. The mobile phone starchart, sideralis, was the biggest hit of this event where it managed to gather a huge crowd throughout the days of the exhibition.
In this program also we had publics asking of the technologies of the computer(kiosk) that we used since it amazed many of them. Some also took the opportunity to ask us about the photography aspect of astronomy and these diversity gave us chance to approach the students there from a different approach. We hope to get funding to keep the outreach program at the forefront with the latest technologies to get the public interested in exploring astronomy and space science.
Fotopages is upgrading their system at the moment. Pictures will be coming up in the near future.

Partial Eclipse @ Planetarium Negara
|
|
A partial eclipse took place on 26 January 2009 in Malaysia and the National Planetarium organized a public observation of the rare event that took place that day. An estimated 2,000 people gathered around after numerous announcements made over the media for the past few weeks.
The album for this event is posted in this entry. It was a marvelous occasion until heavy clouds came in around the time right after the maximum point of the eclipse. Overall it was successful in getting the public aware of this phenomenon and another eclipse, lunar in february, hoping to get a response similar to this one.
